Fourth grade team Fireworks participated in DI for the first time and they won 5th place out of 13 in technical challenge "show and tech" and also made it to state final.

Our rising star team Tech Titan was the only rising star team that competed in Top Secret challenge!

There are two other teams that are not registered under John Green, but also have John Green students.  Team "Awesome" won 2nd out of 14 teams in show and tech and advanced to state final.  Team "Vastkids" won 5th place out of 12 teams in Top Secret B and advanced to state final!

ATTENTION 5TH GRADE PARENTS
Yearbook team is looking for 5th grade parents to volunteer and put together 2 special spreads, the baby pictures and Camp Arroyo pages for our 5th grade students. Camp Arroyo pages are due the weekend our students return from the trip, so good coordination with other 5th grade parents is crucial to successfully execute this task. This year, our 5th grade yearbook club students have already designed the pages, the volunteer parents will only need to gather and populate the pictures onto the pages. We are looking for dedicated 5th grade parents to help complete this task as this has been a great tradition and provides a wonderful memento for our graduating class. Our team will train if needed.

Turn in your child’s baby picture! Please upload pictures to the 5th grade Baby Photo Album in Shutterfly, please contact your room parent for more information.

The time of the year has come that our beloved 5th graders will begin that inevitable transition into middle school!  As part of being the big kids on campus, it has been a grand tradition at John Green that the exiting 5th graders have their baby pictures featured in the yearbook.

Please submit ONLY ONE digital copy of your child's baby picture. Please see Room parents for deadlines as this is different for each class.  Please DO NOT drop off any photographs in the school office.  We do not want you to lose any original copies.

Some guidelines to keep in mind for the best possible picture to feature:

1. Under the age of one year is best.  Recommended age is less than 1 to 2 years of age.

2. Mainly a solo and face color photo (leave out background, pets, etc.); high resolution jpegs if possible but no larger than 5x7.

3. No bathtub shots or bare behinds – we don’t want to embarrass them!

4.  If you can, best if you rename the file to the child’s full name and teacher, esp. important for twins.

Any further questions or concerns can be addressed to[email protected]

Thanks,

Yearbook Team

2017 MATH KANGAROO
Sign up now for the 2017 Math Kangaroo contest! John Green Elementary is proud to host this international math contest, happening at 5:00pm on Thursday, Mar. 16, 2017 in the John Green MPR.
Any student who can work INDEPENDENTLY is eligible, and tests are offered for grades 1-5 (kindergartners can register for grade 1). Each test consists of 24 or 30 (only for 5th grade) questions, with 1/3 being 3 point problems, 1/3 being 4 point problems, and 1/3 being 5 point problems. Problems are more puzzle/logic than 'math facts.'  The test is a great way to encourage students to be more excited about math.
We are encouraging ALL parents to talk to their children to see if they would like to take the test. After all, it's just a one day event, and every participant receives a t-shirt and a memento. Early positive feedback and a willing attitude in math pays dividends later. Attitudes toward math are generally formed early in school, and this is a great way to make math a bit more fun and different.
In addition, the John Green PFC is sponsoring local prizes for the top scorers in each grade at John Green. They will also provide healthy snacks on the day of the contest. Thank you!

To register, please go to www.mathkangaroo.org.
IMPORTANT! When registering your child, click the 'Register to Private Center' button and use the code CADUBLI0003278 in order to see John Green as an available center. This registration is for JOHN GREEN STUDENTS ONLY (no older siblings). Space is limited.
Registration closes Dec. 15, 2016.
Email [email protected] with any questions.
MULTICULTURAL NIGHT - APRIL 21st
We are so excited to be planning John Green's 2nd Multicultural Night. The goal is to have FACTS, FUN, and FOOD to represent our diverse community.

FACTS: We like to invite ALL John Green families (including faculty) to represent any cultural background or heritage of your choice and participate in hosting one of the tables.   Families can highlight various cultural backgrounds or heritages from all over the world and we’d love to have at least 1-2 cultures/countries represented from each continent: Asia, Africa, North America (includes Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean), South America, Europe, and Australia (includes New Zealand the Pacific Islands)! For example, an American cultural table can highlight baseball, jazz, and different flavors such as Cajun, New England, Tex-Mex, Hawaiian, Native American, and so on.
Feel free to join with friends to design a table.  Some ideas include a poster or printouts with some facts about each country or culture, a game or craft project representing the culture and/or country of your choice, and/or items such as clothing, a flag, or photos.

FUN: We will set aside part of the evening to join together for a short, informal program of cultural and/or traditional dances and songs performed by students.  Please sign up if your child or children are interested in performing a song or dance, alone or in a group! These will be short (up to 2.5 minutes each) and there is no need for a lot of preparation!
Just like the Olympics, there will be a Parade of Nations where kids can walk around the MPR in their cultural attire (adults are also welcome to dress up).  Feel free to bring a small country flag and wave it proudly!

FOOD: A highlight of Multicultural Night is the chance to taste foods from around the world!

Please let us know if you would like to share a dish from a specific heritage, culture or country of origin, or simply one of your family’s favorites!   There are some district guidelines that need to be followed so a committee member will follow up with you on the details.
Come join in on the fun and sign up online at:

Measure MBB:  More Bouncy Balls
The PFC shall purchase 30 additional playground balls (13 inch in diameter, bouncy balls as used in four square, kickball, etc.) to be used during recess time for kickball, kickback, four square, and wall ball.  (10 balls for grades 1/2 recess; 10 balls for grade 2/3 recess; 10 balls for grades 4/5 recess.)

Arguments for:
Observational data shows that each recess period, many students do not have balls for their chosen activities.  Only those students who arrive to recess first have access to the playground balls.  The purchase of 30 additional bouncy balls (10 per recess period) will allow more students access to their preferred recess activities.  This will lead to less conflict over use of the balls.  Students will also be encouraged to stay active and get more exercise during recess when more balls are accessible.  Students who experience an enjoyable recess period may be more likely to return to class, "ready to learn".

Arguments against:
The purchase of 30 additional playground balls will incur an approximate cost of $500, according to research on Amazon.com and lakeshorelearning.com.   The estimate is based on the purchase price of playground balls with high ratings of customer satisfaction.  Additional playground balls will also require additional storage space.

Measure MH:  More students per class shall be allowed to serve on Green Team, Peacemakers, Student Council, Garden Club, etc.

LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Dear John Green Parents,

The John Green Library has started checking out books to students and we are looking for parent volunteers for the 2016-17 school year.  The library volunteer is an ongoing position throughout the school year, but I also accept drop-in help or appreciate anytime that you may have available.

I am looking for volunteers on Tuesdays through Fridays from 8:45am to 2:00pm.  I also may have needs for help if you are available after 2:00pm to the end of the school day.  There is no set shift or amount of time required, but most volunteers work about 30 minutes during the time of day and the day of the week that suits their schedule.  No library experience is necessary, but a brief orientation of the library will be given before your first volunteer day. Most of the time will be spent shelving books and organizing shelves, but there are other tasks such as labeling and prepping new books for the shelves.

Please email me some times or dates you may be available and then I can set up a brief orientation time.  If you have any additional questions feel free to email me [email protected] or call 925 833-4200 ext 6608.

Sincerely,

Derek Ngai

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO SUPPORT PFC-FUNDED PROGRAMS

Thank you to the parents who have already generously donated to the PFC during Fall Registration.  We are still short of our target to cover our budget for programs for the 2016-17 school year so if you haven't had an opportunity to make your donation we are suggesting $100.00 per student.  This is only 56 cents per day of academic instruction.  As a token of appreciation for your financial support you may receive a yearbook, fleece blanket, or other spirit items if you donate by Sept 2.

Our school depends on your donations to the PFC to help fund the wonderful programs that we have at Green.  We’ve been fortunate to be able to bring in a wide variety of programs, but it is dependent on getting support from each family.  You are our major funding source.  Over 65% of all PFC funds collected are used exclusively for educational programs .

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT - Tue Aug 30

Back To School Night for parents of Grade 1-5 students is on Tues, August 30.  During Back to School Night, you can sign up for various volunteer opportunities to help in the class such as Art in Action, Junior Achievement, possibly Character Education for some rooms (ask your teacher), Yearbook Photographer, and Room Parent.   Go to http://www.johngreenpfc.org/volunteer  for descriptions and to volunteer for other events and programs.  Please indicate if you like to be an event or program coordinator.

SUPPORT FOR Mrs. FAULKNER - BELOVED K AND 1st GRADE TEACHER
Support for Mrs. Faulkner, beloved K and 1st Grade Teacher

Another school year has started here at John Green Elementary in Dublin, Ca. Unfortunately, we are missing a familiar face within our staff. Kris Faulkner, who is a loving mother of two girls, commutes into Dublin to Job Share in both Kindergarten and First Grade. She has been working within the Dublin community for more than 19 years. Kris has had a lasting affect on many children's educational careers as well as their lives.

About two weeks before school started Kris suffered from a series of strokes leaving her incapacitated. At first she was unable to speak and walk. Slowly she is becoming more mobile. Although she is in therapy for several hours a day, she does still need to have someone with her at all times.

Our staff at John Green wanted to reach out to the community and others to ask for any donations for our fellow teacher. We are looking for financial contributions to help with medical equipment that Kris will need to regain her strength and to help her move around better. These donations will also help with other finances since her husband has had to take time off his work to help with all that is needed, not to mention the climbing hospital bills.

The staff at John Green Elementary truly appreciates any and all donations!
